5 - Week 1: New Kid on the Block 3ieme - Geneve
Wednesday, February 26
Today my local boss was onsite today and it was great getting to meet him in person. I don't have to worry about being neglected by him, my desk is situated directly opposite his so I should be able to just poke my head over my monitor to ask him a question 😆 He might be one of the most international people I know with at least 6 very different languages under his belt!
He's giving me a very slack leash to work with: there's a few overarching projects for me to work on but it's ultimately up to me to define what the success criteria are and how long each project will take. And as far as meeting the various teams on site, he's putting the ball in my court to coordinate meeting with people and managing my time spent between projects/labs.
With clear skies, the view from the train of the Jura mountains is pretty spectacular.
This evening again featured a visit to one of the train stations supermarkets. It's such a bizarre feeling regarding a rat race to grab food before everything closes up; perhaps I'm just used to eating later in the evening and will get used to it or I'm missing something. Either way, it was another dining in night featuring cheese and charcuterie plus a salad from the COOP market.
Crossing the Rhone near where I'd been Saturday but at sunset, I'll admit it's pretty nice.
Some buildings have more character than others, this one was kinda on the outer border of the old town. The columns up top caught my attention.
Hmm, I'll have to give one of these skating rinks a try if I manage to get home before they close. The rental fee seems very reasonable.
Look at those students studiously studying; a coworker who'd done her university in Switzerland said that most students go out on Thursday night before returning home (to their parents) Friday evening.
Free bike top off and repair station, a pretty snazzy item to place just outside the university building.
Here's the skating rink in Carouge, only a block away from the apartment. So I really don't have an excuse not to hit the rink at least once this trip.
Since it's been 5 days here, I've basically consumed half of the underwear/socks I packed. So after walking home from the station (I felt like wandering and stretching my legs), I was able to sneak of load of laundry in before the machines shut off at 9:30. It took me a good 5 minutes to figure out the buttons on the washer, only 2 minutes for the dryer due to similarity. The dryer featured a little foam pad for catching lint that's supposed to be washed by hand between loads to keep up efficiency and safety.
I'm just glad I eventually got the machine running; I don't think I'm stupid but I struggled with finding the "Start" button. Do you see it?
With a couple melatonin tablets on deck, I'm hoping to get some good sleep tonight. I still haven't committed to a Saturday activity just yet but I'm debating between a quick ski day or absinthe tasting. I suppose tomorrow-John will have to decide; boy, I don't envy him 😂

I'm going to go with "guy running"
ReplyDeleteThat's what I thought at first too, but that's the button for the "express" cycle and cuts your wash cycle from 55 minutes to 27 minutes. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
